Lot Essay

Jim Blake, the subject of the present work, was an Irishman whom Nicol often used as a model. He is also principal figure in An Irish Immigrant arriving at Liverpool, Nicol's celebrated work of 1871 now in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland.
