Lot Essay

This is a variant of a picture in the collection of the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo, no. 393, formerly attributed to Francesco Rizzo (see F. Heinemann, Giovanni Bellini e i Belliniani, Venice, 1959, p. 158. no. S.462 , fig. 638). Heinemann (op. cit.) attributes it to an anonymous artist working in Rizzo's circle, noting the influence of Palma Vecchio.
