A FINE AND VERY RARE BUDDHIST VOTIVE PAINTING
WANLI, 19TH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO A.D. 1592

Finely painted with five manifestations of Buddha, each figure eminating a nimbus framing a full face with moustache and a short beard, garbed in voluminous multi-layered monastic robes exposing the bare chest, standing on lotus socles amidst swirling ruyi-clouds, each figure labelled with a venerable name, the bottom right label bearing inscriptions of the donars, and the left corner bearing the commenorative dates

Lot Essay

There are two dates inscribed on the painting, the first commenorating the date in which this work was executed (A.D. 1593) and the second recording the year in which it was mounted (A.D. 1696). A similar example of five standing Guanyin, dated 10th year of Shunzi (A.D. 1654), was sold in these Rooms, 6 November 1997, lot 1077.
