AN UNUSUAL LARGE INK MODELLED AS A GU QIN
INCISED GUANGXU YIHAI CYCLICAL DATE, CORRESPONDING TO A.D. 1899

Naturalistically moulded as a gu qin with a slightly tapering body, the seven strings raised in shallow relief emerging from circular gilded dots representing the turning pegs, with further thirteen gilded larger circles along the length of the body, the tail end gilded in the semi-arched recesses, the reverse with intaglio inscriptions in clerical script between sunken rectangles imitating the sound holes
24 in. (61 cm.) long, fitted lacquer and gilt box

Lot Essay

As indicated by the inscription this ink was made for an official in Xinan, located in Anhui province, during mid-Summer of 1899. This unusually large sized ink is formed in the shape of a gu qin, a traditional seven string instrument, was commissioned by the Tian family bearing the studio name Jifu.
