Lot Essay

Ivan Aivazovsky was born in Feodossia, Crimea to a shop-keeper. His talents were soon noticed by the governor of the city, which enabled him to enter the Beaux-Arts academy of St. Petersburg at the age of sixteen. He was awarded a travel scholarship and this afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout Italy, Greece and Spain. He also went to Turkey, Asia, Egypt, America and England where he was seduced by the work of Turner.
He was considered a marine painter above all else and was the first painter of the Imperial Russian Navy. He was arwaded many medals and in 1857 he was appointed professor at the St. Petersburg Beaux Arts Acedemy and Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur. He exhibited at the Paris Salon's of 1878 and 1900 and also had exhibitions of his own works in 1843, 1857, 1879 and 1887.
