Lot Essay

Nicolas Gosse was a pupil of F.A. Vincent. He exhibited historical paintings and portraits at the Paris Salons from 1808 to 1870. In 1827 he was commissioned by Charles X to execute decorations en grisaille for the Muse Charles X in the Louvre. Based on subjects from ancient history and partly executed in collaboration with Auguste Vinchon, these decorations can now be admired in the Egyptian rooms of the Museum (Inv. no. 8472-8475).

Although the Marshall who is the subject of the present painting has thus far resisted identification, he was most probably one of the twenty-six such officers in Napoleon's service, who, on his return from the campaigns, decided to commission the pictures to commemorate his victories.
