FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. Following the publication of On the Origin of Species, Gray and Lyell attempted to reconcile Darwinism with traditional religious belief by arguing that species had evolved according to Divine plan. Gray's review first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly over July, August, and October in 1860. Darwin was pleased with the review and republished it at his own expense. He would eventually reject Gray's strategy of attempting to combine natural selection with natural theology. VERY RARE. Norman 938.

"After the Origin appeared Gray was one of its staunchest defenders, and his initial review of the book did much to dispel American feelings that Darwinism was akin to atheism. It was later republished as the first chapter of Gray's Darwiniana (Norman 937). (2)
