FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ENGLISH BOOK DEVOTED SPECIFICALLY TO MEDICAL STATISTICS, which the author himself defined as "the application of numbers to illustrate the natural history of man in health and disease". Although his methods were not entirely sound, his work was important in drawing attention to the statistical importance of hospital records. He was instrumental in ensuring that the first Act of Parliament for the Registration of Births and Deaths required causes of death to be recorded on death certificates.
