Lot Essay

This chair recalls designs published by William Chambers (d.1756) in his Designs of Chinese Buildings... of 1757 (see a design for a similar settee reproduced in E.White, ed., Pictorial Dictionary of British Eighteenth Century Furniture Design, 1990, p.133). Chambers, architect to George II, illustrated authentic Chinese furniture seen on his trips to China hoping to put 'a stop to the extravagancies that daily appear under the name of Chinese, though most of them are mere inventions...' (op.cit, p.46).
