Lot Essay

Although the identity of the sitter is unknown, the pose is related to that of van Dyck's portrait of Cecilia Crofts, dated 1638, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Attached to the reverse of the stretcher is a fragment of a letter signed by Sir Anthony van Dyck 'Mijn huize Ve volmoedigeordinaens Ant° van Dyck .... 19 Augtv'1636'
