Lot Essay

Paul Brandt's career in jewellery design spanned both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. He is nonetheless more renowned for his production in the latter style. His creations adhered to the principles of the Artist-Jewellers such as Jean Fouquet, Georges Sandoz and Raymond Templier, displaying a penchant for geometric forms and primary colours. The present brooch is most likely an example of his early Deco creations. The radiating surround in diamonds and calibré-cut sapphires depicts an angular sunburst. The central moonstone is carved with a Venus motif reminiscent of classical figures in the paintings of such artists as Jean Dupas or in the decoration and mouldings of the period's architecture.
