Lot Essay

The present picture is to be dated to circa 1650/60, when the artist had settled in The Hague. There he specialised in genre scenes, on a small scale, in which the soft chiaroscuro, inspired by Rembrandt, is one of the most characteristic features.
Compare also with the Seated boy, sold at Sotheby's London, 5 April 1995, lot 229, ill.
