E. Buijsen, op. cit, was the first to attribute the present picture to Van Borssom. This has gained further support from Professor W. Sumowski in a letter dated 11 September 1998. Both Buijsen and Sumowski have drawn attention to the cow in the left foreground which is repeated in the picture in the Metropolitan Museum (W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandtschýler, I, 1983, p.429, n0200, ill.) and derives from an engraving from the series of eight called Bulleboekje by Paulus Potter (Holl.3; E. Buijsen, op. cit., n047). As pointed out by Sumowski, op. cit., p.426, Van Borssom was an eclectic master. His oeuvre shows a variety of genres, inspired by different masters. Paulus Potter was his most important example, from whose oeuvre he frequently quoted.
