Lot Essay

Professor Bolten has kindly confirmed the attribution and dates this to circa 1625-35. This drawing is part of a series of studies of heads, of which a drawing of the head of a bearded old man with the same provenance was sold in these Rooms, 15 November 1993, lot 12, illustrated. Other versions of the present lot are in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, E. Bock, J. Rosenberg, Die Niederländischen Meister, Berlin, 1930, no. 222, and in the Herzog Anton-Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig. The series would seem to be related to a group of similar pictures painted in 1632-9 (M. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his Sons, Paintings and Prints, Doornspijk, 1993, nos. 518-41).
