Lot Essay

Jan Peeters of the Gemeentearchief Amsterdam has kindly suggested the topographical identification, pointing out that the walls were part of the Nieuwstad of Antwerp, a new part of the city after its 16th Century expansion. Though Gillis (Aegidius) Neyts (1623-1687) was active in Antwerp, the old inscription attributing this drawing to him seems unlikely as his style of drawing is different.
