Lot Essay

Comparable in subject, handling and format to Waterloo's drawing in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, B. Broos, M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse Tekenaars geboren tussen 1600 en 1660, Amsterdam Zwolle, 1993, p. 221, no. 173, illustrated, which bears the artist's monogram. It was, like the present lot, most probably drawn during Waterloo's trip through Northern Germany, including Hamburg and Danzig (see lots 81-2 sold in these Rooms, 10 November 1997).
