Lot Essay
Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg first suggested that this and the following lot should be attributed to Wyck. They are by the same hand as two interiors in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt and the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, B. Schnackenburg, Adriaen van Ostade, Isack van Ostade, Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, Hamburg, 1981, nos. 99-100, illustrated, which Schnackenburg attributed to Thomas Wyck. Other interiors by Wyck are in the Teyler Museum, Haarlem (M. Plomp, The Dutch Drawings in Teyler Museum, II, Haarlem Ghent Doornspijk, 1997, p. 474, no. 568), and in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich, 1980, V, no. 703). For the present drawing Wyck was probably inspired by Adriaen van Ostade's peasant scenes, such as that sold in these Rooms, 10 November 1997, lot 129, illustrated.
