Lot Essay

Tanjé copied the portrait of William III by Willem Wissing (1653-1687), while the composition of the print, which incorporated the portrait, was designed by Gerard Sanders (1702-1767). The present drawing is closely comparable to the mezzotint by Gerard Valck (1651/2-1726) after Sir Peter Lely's picture. Prince William III (1650-1702) married the later Mary Queen of England in 1677, and became King of England in 1689.
