Lot Essay

In a letter to his son George dated 13 January 1962 Escher writes that he appreciated the commission for this column, but all the same he regretted the task because it withheld him from undertaking a new print.
The actual column, decorated with tiles after Escher's design, was reveiled on March 23, 1962
