Lot Essay

D.F. Lunsingh Scheurleer suggests that there could be a connection between this scene and the fountain in the gardens of Versailles. For a similar plate see his, Chinese Export Porcelain, p. 140, pl. 224. For a straining dish with the same decoration see D. Howard & J. Ayers, China for the West, Vol I, p. 339, pl. 339.
