Lot Essay

Spencer painted this subject on three occasions; in 1921, 1934 and 1958, for which the present drawing is a study. The Crucifixion, (Private Collection), 1958, (Bell 441) was commissioned by J.E. Martineau a brewer and patron of Spencer. It was intended to hang with In Church, (Private Collection), 1958, (Bell 442) as lunette and predella for a new chapel extension at Aldenham School. Spencer explained the imagery to to the boys at Aldenham, 'I have given the men who are nailing Christ on the cross - and making sure that they make a good job of it - Brewers caps, because it is your Governors, and you who are still nailing Christ to the cross'. (see Sir J. Rothenstein (ed.), op. cit., p.131). See also lot 48.
