Lot Essay

The finished painting, The Glove Shop, (Private Collection), 1959, (Bell 444) was the last figure painting that Spencer completed. It was painted between April and May 1959. It formed part of the Shop series and commemorated a shop in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, which Spencer visited with Daphne Charlton in 1940-41. (see K. Bell, op. cit., p.517).
