Lot Essay

The present drawing appears to relate to Washing Peter's Feet (City Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle), 1922, (Bell 94). Gilbert Spencer, the artist's brother depicts a young Stanley perched on a similar hoop-backed chair in the line drawing, What might have been seen by a visitor in his Stanley Spencer by his brother Gilbert (op. cit., p.72).
