LOUISA ANNE TWAMLEY (1812-1895)
Flora's Gems: or, the treasures of the Parterre. Twelve bouquets, drawn and coloured from nature, by.. Andrews. With poetical illustrations, by.. Twamley. London: Clarke for Charles Tilt, [1836]. Small 2 (370 x 275mm). 2pp. advertisements at end. Hand-coloured lithographic additional title, 11 fine hand-coloured lithographic plates, all after Andrews. (Some light spotting.) Original publisher's deluxe red morocco, blocked in gilt and blind, covers with large neo-classical vase with flower arrangement, the flat spine with title and various floral motifs blocked horizontally, g.e. (corners and joints rubbed, spine chipped at head and foot, upper cover slightly marked).
First edition of one of the finest of all works in this genre, in a publisher's deluxe binding. The plates by Andrews lift it above the more run-of-the-mill works that were produced in answer to the demand for attractive but undemanding books designed for the drawing-room table. The plates show groups of various flowers, carefully arranged on the page and lithographed to a very high standard (probably by Andrews himself). Although Andrews appears to have specialised in this type of work he was also clearly recognised as a serious botanical artist and produced illustrations for Robert Warner's Select Orchidaceous Plants, and The Floral Magazine edited by Thomas Moore. The present work can be dated to 1836 from the advertisment for the second edition of The Romance of Nature. BM(NH) V,p.2156; Dunthorne 13 ("Carefully drawn and coloured"); Nissen BBI 35.
