Lot Essay

The bergere, with tapering columnar feet, palm-flowered tablets and cippus-capped arms, relates to the French/antique fashion promoted by R. Ackermann's The Repository of Arts, London, following its launch in 1809 as a monthly magazine. A pattern for a related 'library chair', to be executed in the 'Grecian' style in mahogany with red morocco leather upholstery, featured in his Repository in 1810 (P. Agius, Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, Marlborough, 1984, p. 51, pl. 15).
