Decorated in iron-red, green, blue, yellow and black enamels, each lobed side with a bird perched on scrolling foliage and karakusa among peony and hibiscus, the shoulder and the neck with lappets, the cover, loop handle and spout similarly decorated

Lot Essay

During the late 17th and early 18th Centuries tea was normally drunk in the closet or inner sanctum. In England the Lauderdales were among the earliest tea drinkers. The Duchess kept her "tea furnace" in a closet some eleven foot square, together with a "tea table" and a "Japan box for sweetmeats and tea".
