A Kyo-bako [Sutra Box] With Pierced Gilt Copper Mounts
Early Edo Period (circa 1620-40) in the style of the Kamakura Period
Decorated in gold hiramakie and tsukegaki with the horin mon [the wheel of the Buddhist law], over a black lacquer ground, gilt copper rims to the edges of the box and cover and to eight foliate piercings around the base, two further rims, one around the bottom of the base and one at the level of the bottom of the box, further decorated with pierced floral kanamono in the Kamakura-period style, the interior of the cover sparse nashiji, over which is lacquered a cascade of six falling lotus petals, some chips and cracks, three kanamono damaged and one missing
