Nazmi Ziya was a member of the Association of Ottoman painters and one of the leading impressionist artists in Turkey, belonging to a group generally referred to as the Generation of 1914.
Around 1910 he travelled to Europe to work in the studios of Marcel Bachet and Fernand Cormon in Paris, where he remained for five years and in 1918 he was appointed instructor at the Fine Arts Academy in Istanbul, contributing to the spread of Impressionism in his country.
