Lot Essay

This study, which Renée Loche has kindly dated from c.1796-98, is an exceptionally original and powerful image. Adele Topffer, the author of the inscription on the reverse, was the granddaughter of the artist Adam Topffer (1766-1847), who was a close friend of Agasse's.
