Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the present watercolour depicts Miss Baker. The Bakers of Bayfordbury Park were early patrons of Rowlandson. For another watercolour of the sitter by Rowlandson, formerly in the A.E.W. Wheeler Collection, see B. Falk, Thomas Rowlandson, his life and art, London, 1949, illustrated opposite p. 124.
