Lot Essay

A slightly more finished watercolour of the same view is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The only difference is in the figures to the left of the composition. The Ashmolean version depicts a mother and two children carrying sticks and omits the figure leaning over the railing outside the left hand building.
