Lot Essay

Comparisons with the portrait of Harriet Matthew in profile are not altogether convincing, but this drawing and another illustrated in D. Bindman, ed. John Flaxman, R.A., exhibition catalogue, Kunsthalle, Hamburg, and Royal Academy, London, 197, p. 37, fig. 17, may well show the same sitter at a more advanced age; in addition, she is shown with a more formal and elaborate coiffure.
