Lot Essay

In the Autumn of 1838 Callow made his first visit to Switzerland. Arriving in Lausanne he and an aquaintance, Mr. Forman, trecked with knapsacks to Vevey and Villeneuve, on Lake Geneva, from where they took the steam boat to Geneva. As they travelled Callow stopped to make sketches and in 1839 he exhibited a watercolour of Lake Geneva from the Church of St. Martin, Vevey, at the Society of Painters in Watercolours. Two years later Callow made another trip to Switzerland, again in the company of Forman, however he never stayed in Geneva for very long and views of the city are correspondingly rare among his exhibited works.

We are grateful to John Zwemmer, for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
