Lot Essay

1854 saw Lear's second trip to Egypt in the company of William Holman Hunt, R.W.S. (1827-1910). Lear arrived in Cairo in December 1853 and set off up the Nile immediately after Christmas.
Ballas is between Qena and Qus, just north of Luxor.
