Lot Essay

In addition to teaching drawing at the Addiscombe Military Academy, Laporte instructed many private pupils, including Dr. Thomas Monro, patron of Girtin, Turner, Varley, de Wint and Linnell. Much of his topographical work shows a debt to Sandby, although occasionally hints of early Turner can be detected. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution from 1785.
