Lot Essay

Goodwin has wryly inscribed this watercolour 'a certain sketch'. A summons dated 31 October 1918, preserved on the reverse of the frame, records how the artist 'then being within a prohibited area for the time being specified by the competent Naval or Military Authorites did unlawfully without the permission of such competent Naval or Military Authority, or the Minister of Munitions, make a certain sketch within such prohibited area Contrary to Sec. 19. of the Defence of the Realm Regulations and contrary to the form of the Statute in such case made and provided'. Notwithstanding this encounter, the south coast continued to provide the artist with his favourite subjects.
