Collation: A-K10 l8 a8 b-s10 s-u10 v-z10 10 aa-gg10 hh8 ii8 (A1 blank, A2r Distinctiones, a1r Causae, ii8r colophon, ii8v blank). 451 (of 452, without first blank) leaves. 56 lines of text with commentary surround, double column, headline. Types 1:180G (headline), 3:110G (text), 2:90G (commentary), 4:48G (point letters). Headings, headlines, colophon, most initials and paragraph marks printed in red. FIRST PAGE ILLUMINATED BY A CONTEMPORARY SOUTH-GERMAN ARTIST in gold and colors, large initial in blue with white modelling on gold ground within a frame alternating red and green, leafy vine border filling lower margin, initials opening each Causa in interlocking red and blue, other initials supplied in blue, red capital strokes. (Small wormtrack and dampstain in upper margin of first quire, light dampstaining in final quire, marginal staple hole in last few leaves.) Contemporary Nuremberg binding by Kyriss shop 116 (stamps 1, 2, 5, 6 and others), active c. 1472-1490, blindstamped calf over wooden boards, title stamped on upper cover, chain staple hole on rear board, yellow edges, index tabs (worn, boards somewhat wormed, lacking clasps). Provenance: inscription on front pastedown dated 1494 ('4 fe.re anno 94 per connar--- nomine domini Walrici per Locher'); Munich, Franciscan convent (early inscription on first page); monogram STAM stamped on upper edge; monogram FH (small stamp on front pastedown).
A LARGE, FRESH COPY, with fine red printing and contemporary illumination of one of the foundation texts of canon law. Some of the binding stamps are very similar to a named Nuremberg binder, Franz Staindorffer (Kyriss shop 65) who bound one of the copies of the present edition in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
