ORNITHOPARCUS, Andreas (fl.15-16th century). Musice artiue micrologus. Leipzig: Valentine Schumann, April 1519.
4° (195 x 136mm). Title printed in red and black, woodcut 4-part title border, the lower piece incorporating musical staves, numerous woodcuts of music, scales, and diagrams, printer's device at end. Gothic type (text), roman type (shoulder notes, title verses), Greek type (a few words). (Shoulder notes slightly shaved, light marginal dampstain.) 19th-century calf panelled in blind, narrow gilt border, gilt spine, marbled endpapers, speckled edges. Provenance: early musical annotations on a few woodcuts and on final blank verso.
A rare work containing an epitome of known musical theory at the beginning of the 16th century. It publishes Vogelsang's (translated into Greek as Ornithoparcus) lectures given at the universities of Heidelberg, Mainz and Tbingen. The first edition was published at Leipzig in 1517 (Brunet, apparently incorrectly, cites the year as 1516) and it was followed by at least 5 editions, all rare.
