CABELIAU, Abraham. Reken-konst vande Groote See-Vaert Waer doormen op alle streken van 't compas so wel de lenghde Oost ende West kan vinden als de breede Zuydt ende Noort. Amsterdam: Paulus van Ravensteyn, 1617.

VERY RARE AND IN EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION. This work, which concerns the uses and divisions of compasses and the distance between East and West and North and South, was intended primarily for the use of sailors: the author ends the preface hoping that his contribution to navigation will be of use and wishing his readers a safe journey. The preface outlines the subject matter of each chapter; this includes the names of the compass points, how to measure variation between true and magnetic North, how the navigator can accommodate the variation, the measurement of nautical distance, use of the sun for navigation, understanding how to read maps on a sea journey, and lastly a chapter on the points of the compass and how to measure distance East and West and South and North. Each chapter consists of a brief introduction to the subject under discussion followed by a series of practical examples, each with an explanation, many of which are supported by appropriate diagrams, charts, or tables. Little has been written about Cabeliau and his contribution to maritime navigation, but he was writing at a time of great progress in the science: after Martin Cortes, William Cunningham, Michael Coignet, and Roderico Zamorano, and concurrent with Andreas Garcia de Cespedes, Petrus Plancius, Gerard Mercator, John Davis, Edward Wright, Pierre Vernier, and Richard Norwood. Cabeliau is mentioned en passant by Kees Zandvliet in Mapping for Money (Amsterdam 1998) pp. 36 and 60. NOT IN NUC.
