FIRST EDITION. Zarlino, 'one of the most learned [Italian music theorists] of the 16th century' (Grove), wrote the Dimostratione in the form of five dialogues between his former master Adrien Willaert, Claudio Merulo and Francesco Viola. The first of the dialogues concerns proportions of the intervals, and the following dialogues concern the ratios of the consonances, lesser intervals, the division of the monochord, and the authentic and plagal modes.
