CHURCHILL, Winston Spencer (1874-1965). Autograph letter signed to Mary Spender ('My dear Mrs Spender'), Board of Trade, Whitehall Gardens, 4 September 1908, one page, 8vo, integral blank leaf (light soiling).
A fulsome expression of thanks for a present - 'It is very kind of you to send me such beautiful books. They will fill an honoured place in my library'.
Churchill had been President of the Board of Trade since April 1908. The recipient was the wife of Alfred Spender, the influential political journalist and editor of the Westminster Gazette. The Spenders' present may have been in advance of Churchill's wedding, which took place on 12 September 1908.
