Lot Essay

Lady Mary Meynell, née Lindsay, was the daughter of Alexander, 25th Earl of Crawford and 8th Earl of Balcarres (1812-1880). She married in 1878 the Hon. Frederick Wood, 4th son of Charles, 1st Viscount Halifax, P.C., G.C.B. (1800-1885). He changed his name to Meynell in 1905, after inheriting Hoar Cross from his sister, Emily. She had been bequeathed it by her husband, Hugo Meynell Ingram, M.P., who had died childless.

We are grateful to Mr. Jan de Maere for confirming the attribution, on the basis of a photograph.
