A Queen Anne ebonised small bracket timepiece
Daniel Hawthorn; first quarter 18th century
The case with foliate cast handle to domed top, later escutcheons to the front door and on later brass bun feet, the 7 in. sq. dial signed Daniel Hawthorn on the Roman and Arabic chapter ring with pierced blued steel hands, plain brass centre with ringed winding hole and calendar aperture below XII, Indian mask-and-foliate spandrels, the typical five ringed pillar single fusee movement with later anchor escapement, the pull quarter repeat system now entirely removed, the backplate engraved with a series of twelve flower heads in unusual roundels;

Lot Essay

The glass in the rear door of this clock is pasted with a contemporary cutting from a newspaper dated May 1812 describing how the then Prime Mininster, Mr Spencer Percival, was assasinated by John Bellingham and above the cutting a note giving the reputed provenance to the clock.

One D. Hawthorn of Darlaston is registered in Baillie, Watch and Clockmakers of the World, as working c. 1705.
