The silvered dial signed John Bruce 26 Wapping Liverpool No. 786 and within the subsidiary seconds dial Hartnup Balance No. 3, Roman hour numerals, outer minutes dial with Arabic five minute intermarkers 60-5-10 et seque, gold hour, minute and second hands, up-and-down dial with blued steel hand, Earnshaw escapment, Hartnup balance, blued steel helical balance spring, spring foot detent with jewelled locking stone, brass bowl and gimbal, three-tier coromandel wood box with parallel line brass stringing to front and top lid, the top lid with brass quarter round edging and lined with purple velvet, the middle section with inset rectangular mother-of-pearl plaque (unsigned), flush recessed brass carrying handle.

Lot Essay

The frame is punched T & J.H. for Thomas & John Hewitt, Prescot
The back of the dial shows that the original signature was hammered out but the numerous scratch-marks also present indicate that the original signature was that of Litherland & Davies.
