4 volumes in two, 2 (442 x 270mm). Half-titles. 167 engraved plates, 5 folding, 21 double-page, 3 hand-coloured. (Very occasional spotting, N2 in vol.I with a tear to the lower blank margin). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt by Staggemeier & Welcher, covers with wide decorative border, spines in seven compartments with double raised bands, later green leather lettering-pieces, gilt turn-ins, g.e., binder's label in first volume (joints slightly weak, extremities a trifle rubbed). Provenance: Augustus Arthur Vansittart (armorial bookplate); Cheltenham Public Library (bookplate, a slip noting the work's arrival in the library in 1889).

FIRST EDITION, IN A FINE CONTEMPORARY BINDING BY ONE OF THE MOST FASHIONABLE BINDERS OF THE DAY. This copy includes King's Appendix, containing answers to M.P.L.Dutens... on... the invention of the arch., and has an additional engraved letter from the Society of Antiquaries.
