LOGGAN, David (1635-1700?). Oxonia Illustrata. Oxford: at the Sheldonian Theatre, 1675.

2 (430 x 300mm). Mounted on guards and engraved throughout. Privilege leaf, title, dedication to Charles II, introduction, index and 40 plates (double-page map, double-page plan, double-page plate of university dress, 36 double-page views, one folding view), all by Loggan. (two plates with marginal tears, 3 with tears at the fold running into image area, the outer right margin of the folding plate close-shaved.) 19th-century red roan, spine gilt (but faded, neat repairs to fore-edges). Provenance: Glodaeth Library (booklabel).

FIRST EDITION. Loggan was born in Danzig, but was in England by 1653 and was naturalised as an Englishman in 1675. 'The Oxonia Illustrata was evidently intended as a companion to Wood's 'History and Antiquities of the University of Oxford,' published in 1674, for the table of contents gives, opposite each plate, a reference to the page of that work where the history of the building represented is to be found; and the two books were given together by the university to distinguished visitors.' (DNB). Madan 3035; Wing L-2838.
