Lot Essay

"I made 14 classical self portraits bust directly from my body. Using a sculptural process of licking and washing, I reshaped my image." (J. Antoni, 'Slip of the Tongue' Glasgow 1995, pp. 30-31.)

"In 'Lick and Lather', a classical portrait bust of the artist was created seven times in chocalate and seven times more in soap. She then interacted directly with each of the busts, either by lathering her hands on her own 'face' or by licking her image as a means of changing its physical manifestation." (D. Cameron, in: 'Janine Antoni Slip of the Tongue' Glasgow 1995 p. 46.)
