ADAMS, JOHN, President. Manuscript letter (secretarial copy) to John Jay, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, London, 4 January 1786. 2 pages, 4to. HEALING THE BREACH BETWEEN THE AMERICAN AND ENGLISH EPISCOPAL CHURCHES. Adams, U.S. Minister to the Court of St. James, describes his meeting with the Archbishop at which he delivered letters from Jay and Lee, and "from a Convention of Delegates from the Episcopal Churches in most of the Southern states," urging cooperation with the Church in America. The Archbishop responds with support for religious liberty, but asks "whether the interposition of the english Bishops would not give uneasiness and dissatisfaction in America." Adams recounts that he replied that "the people of the United States in general were for a liberal and generous toleration, I might indeed...call it a Right and the first Right of Mankind to worship God according to their Consciences..." -- JAY, JOHN, Secretary of Foreign Affairs.
