A COLT .44 CAL. MODEL 1873 SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER, SERIAL No. 98216
Large blade fore-sight and frame mounted rear sight. Hard rubber grips (replacements). The butt strap marked BEN WHEELER/CALDWELL KANSAS.
An important town along the cattle drives, Caldwell was rift with lawlessness. In 1882 Henry Brown was appointed Marshall and during the next year Brown appointed Ben Wheeler, as Deputy Marshall. On April 30th 1884, the town of Caldwell discovered that their Marshall, his deputy and two men attempted a bank robbery at Medicine Valley Bank, where the bank president and cashier were killed by Brown and Wheeler. The robbers were trapped in Jackass Canyon, where they surrendered to a posse. The men were returned to the town where Brown was shot dead and Wheeler, with the others were lynched from a tree.
