a white metal capped swagger stick made from wood recovered from the vessel, the cap engraved MADE OF THE TIMBER TAKEN FROM THE WRECK OF THE ROYAL GEORGE SUNK AT SPITHEAD AUGUST 29th 1782, with white metal lined hole for a carrying loop -- 22in. (56cm.) long

Lot Essay

After the Royal George capsized at Spithead with loss of about nine hundred lives, she remained insitu as a serious obstruction to shipping for another sixty or so years being gradually cleared by the Deane brothers pioneering diving techniques. As a consequence much timber was raised and used in the construction of local buildings as well as the production of hundreds of souvenirs such as the above lot.
